Family home evening is a challenge for me. I know the prophet has said we should do it so over the years I have tried many times to family home evening. A few weeks ago the Bishop encouraged me to Pary with the my family and do family home evening. It has been difficult because Des is not interested in family home evening. Samantha and Joanne don't seem to care either.
So I have tried many different approaches. Years ago I made a work book for each of the girls and prepare a whole lot of themes in advance - that did not last for long.
My strategy at the moment is each week we read a hymn from the hymn book and the scriptures that go with it. We talk about it and I sometimes try and sing it, not very well I will add. It doesn't take long so we seem to manage to do it.
This has been a growing experience for me and I enjoy reading the hymns and sharing why they are special to me and what we can learn from them.
We read "Put your shoulder to the wheel" this week. It is one of my mother's favorite hymns. She sang it often while I was growing you. "Count your blessing is another of her favorite hymns". It makes it all the more special because I learnt them from my Mom and she learnt it from the missionary that thought her the gospel and baptised her family.
This week's hymn lead to a discussion about Satanism, Santanic Symbols and choosing good music, things that I have been concerned about and wanting to discusse with the girls. I never planned it - it just happened.
Last week we discussed sin and temptation. Samantha choose the hymn "keep the Commandments" because it was the shortest she could find. Our short discussions we have had over the last weeks have been meaning full. i am glad we do this and pray we can "carry on" each week and we will be a righteous family together
I hope Samantha and Joanne remember the hymns they hear me sing. I don't sing them as often as I should. I think I'll start another list - My favorite hymns.

Thanks for your comment on my blog, I had been meaning to visit it since my mom told me you had one, but you know, life with a two year old, you get distracted so quickly.
ReplyDeleteI had never realy thought about it that way before, I hope things imprive with Samantha. At the core, she is a good kid, just hold onto that. Soon enough, the time will come when she will come to know that for herself.
