Granny Edna has been living with us for the past 6 months. We have come to know her better and she has come to know us better to. We had a braai to celebrate her 85th birthday on Saturday. All her living children where there and almost all of her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. My house was over flowing with people.
Her Children and grandchildren all love her deeply and respect her greatly. Granny worked until she was 60 at a factory that made linen. She walked each day to the train station and caught the train to work. She worked all of adult life and supported her husband who was unable to work after he developed a brain tumor and had brain surgery.
After the surgery his character changed. He began to drink heavily and was abusive. She stayed with him. When I asked her why - she said no one else would look after him. Some may think that was wrong, but her children are all married. 3 of the 5 have not been divorced. All of her living children are happily married.
Marriage, family and children are important to all of her descendants.
She has had many challenges in her life, much pain and heartache but she is cheerful in her afflictions. She is honoured by her posterity. Her children are fiercely protective of her.
